We were excited to recently unveil our new and improved pub garden in Worthing

12936560_997262947035871_8620161943774930994_nIf you’ve been following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you’ll know that we recently held a grand opening for our pub garden. An outdoor space was just one of the things that drew us the building that is now our Corner House, and when we took it on, we knew we really wanted to make the most of it.

Thanks to Olly Martin Landscape & Garden Services, we’ve created a courtyard pub garden in Worthing to the rear of the building, accessible from the street and through our brand new bifold doors. Wooden pods have been put up, which are heated, making it perfect even in the chillier months. The pods even come with plug sockets too, ideal for charging phones or doing a bit of work alfresco! We held a St Patrick’s Day party to celebrate the grand opening, and lots of fun and Guinness was had by all!

We’re so proud that our traditional pub now has a traditional pub garden in Worthing to go with it – with spring having sprung, we’re getting very excited for the summer months in our gorgeous outside space!

quiz night in WorthingAt The Corner House, we’re big on being a traditional local for the people of Worthing – a proper pub, and no pub is proper without a Quiz Night! So, on Mondays, we’re holding a Quiz Night thanks to our friend Gareth E. Owens.

Gareth, an established Worthing Quizmaster, will be in charge of testing our general knowledge, and the initial few weeks have been a roaring success. Teams and tables can be arranged through Gareth’s Facebook page – It’s advisable to book, as it gets very popular!

Gareth gets down to Quizness at The Corner House around 8.30pm each Monday, and always puts on a fun night in our cosy pub. We’re excited to be hosting this quiz night in Worthing- another achievement for us at The Corner House.

Craft Beer in Worthing

Craft Beer explained

At The Corner House, we place a lot of emphasis on Craft Beer in Worthing, but it is a fairly new term to mainstream pubs and bars, so here’s everything you need to know about Craft Beer.

The interesting thing about craft beer is that everyone has their own interpretation of its definition. The bones of it are that it describes well-made beer created by small, independent breweries in relatively small batches.

The concept started in America in the 2000’s, and soon spread to the UK, where a brewing revival was desperately needed. Creating beer became about breathing new life into old techniques and beer styles, bringing them straight into the 21st century, and transforming the selection for the discerning beer lover.

There’s been an explosion of these microbrewers in the last 10 years, and Britain now boasts over 1,300 breweries. It’s no surprise that championing these rising stars in the beer world has become very popular, thanks to the high levels of skill and passion that go into their brews.unspecified-18

Brewing is woven into the heritage of the South of England, and Sussex especially, which makes it very exciting for us to be craft beer lovers. Some of our favourites include Bedlam Brewery, Burning Sky, Longman Brewery, and Dark Star. These ventures all had small beginnings, but are now Sussex success stories, creating beer locally with the same love for brewing that they started with.

We’re proud to offer craft beer in Worthing, and we’re excited to continue supporting these local gems.

Supplier Profile: Camden Town Brewery

A closer look at a London gem

unspecified-18One of the stars of our pumps is the Camden Hells Lager, one of the classic pints from Camden Town Brewery. It’s founder, Jasper Cuppaidge, was inspired to start brewing beer by his own taste for lager. Disappointed with what the market currently had to offer, he wanted to make lager great again in his own town, and so Camden Town Brewery was born.

Jasper, who already owned a pub, had a good understanding of how to improve on the quality of what was already out there. He strived to strike the perfect balance between hops, yeast and grain, and worked tirelessly to produce a range he was satisfied with. Even today, improving upon their current brews is important to Camden Town Brewery, which means constant monitoring is required.

Camden Hells itself is a classic – easy drinking, with a depth of flavour that makes it stand out from the first sip. It combines the crisp style of a German Pilsner, with the gentle hopping of a Helles to create the perfect drink for lager connoisseurs and beer lovers alike. We’re proud stock this award winning lager from a home grown brewery who have made it big in the beer world.

New ales at The Corner House bar

Have a look at the new ales at The Corner House

New ales at The Corner HouseWe’re passionate about supporting local breweries at The Corner House, which means we’re very excited about the two new beers we’ve recently added to the bar. First up is the LSD real ale from Langham Brewery. This award winning auburn beer is one to savour, and balances maltiness with spicy hop aromas. The brewery itself is established at Lodsworth, part of the Cowdray Estate in West Sussex and has gone from strength to strength since 2005, already winning 12 awards for its traditional cask conditioned real ales.

New ales at The Corner HousePacific Gem from Firebird Brewing Co is also a one of the new ales at The Corner House, a New Zealand inspired pale beer with ‘pronounced bitterness, oaken flavours and a signature blackberry aroma’. Best enjoyed with fish, this particular beverage would go well with our smoked salmon starter! Firebird Brewing Co are based near Horsham in West Sussex, and brew examples of outstanding beers from around the world, using modern technology and years of experience.

Supplier Profile – Shepherd Neame Brewery

A closer look at one of Britain’s oldest breweries

Being established on the site of one of Worthing’s oldest pubs, we know the importance of doing history justice at The Corner House, which is why we’re proud to stock beers by Shepherd Neame Brewery. Situated in Kent and family owned since 1864, Shepherd Neame is Britain’s oldest brewer, and produces a range of cask ales and filtered beers. They own 338 pubs and hotels in Kent, London and South East England, and export to more than 35 countries including Sweden, Italy, Brazil and Canada.

WShepherd Neame Brewerye’re particularly fond of their Whitstable Bay collection, which the brewery operate under the moniker of Faversham Steam Brewery. The name was originally adopted when Shepherd Neame became one of the first steam breweries in the UK, and has been revived to reflect the traditional style of the Whitstable Bay collection.

Our particular favourite is Whitstable Bay Pale Ale, which is a light coloured beer brewed using Challenger and Styrian Goldings hops, and Ale and Crystal malts. It’s designed to be a great all rounder, which is why it goes down so well at The Corner House. Any connoisseurs will notice a sweet, grapefruit theme throughout, which is pleasing to all palettes.

We’re proud to stock tasty beer from such an established figure in the brewing world, who now embrace 21st century beer making techniques whilst maintaining that traditionally refreshing flavour.
